We all have multiple sub-personalities, or “parts”, that contribute to our overall functioning. These parts are similar to our inner child, except we have many of them, and they can show up at various development ages. Each part will have a unique set of emotions, beliefs, and coping tools that have developed over time. Getting to know, understand, and appreciate each of these parts can promote healing by helping you to develop a cohesive and integrated sense of self.
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an extensively researched psychotherapy method, proven to help people heal from trauma. When a traumatic event occurs, the memory can become "locked" in the brain with the original images, negative thoughts, feelings, and sensations that were experienced at the time of the event. The eye movements that are used in EMDR, which are similar to the eye movements happening in REM (dream) sleep, can "unlock" the memory and allow the brain to naturally process the traumatic material that has been stored in the unconscious.
For many people, the destructive habits that we pick up originally developed as coping tools for trauma that was experienced early in life. Learning to understand and accept your emotions, as well as their accompanying behaviors, can assist you in handling all life situations from a place of inner peace. Where ever you're at in your recovery journey, we can work together to reduce these maladaptive behaviors, and increase your access to more positive coping tools.
